Guidelines for Museum Victoria Images

Would you like to buy or reproduce an image owned by Museum Victoria?

The Discovery Centre coordinates all requests for images owned by Museum Victoria as well as those that appear in our exhibitions, publications and websites.

Private research and/or personal use
You may download, display and reproduce material that appears in our exhibitions, publication and websites in an unaltered form for your own private research and/or personal use.

All other uses
If you plan to copy, adapt, publish, re-sell, distribute or commercialise any material contained within Museum Victoria exhibitions, publications or websites, for any purpose other than private research or personal use, you must request the permission of Museum Victoria.

All collection access applications must be received in writing. In order to service your request, we need to know which image you are interested in and how you intend to you it.

Where possible please supply the following information:

• The title of the image
• A description of the image (subject, place, names, general description)
• The photographer’s name
• Details of where you found the image (location in an exhibition, page number and details of a publication, URL)
• Exactly how you plan to use the image

The images that appear in Museum Victoria publications, exhibitions and websites are protected by Intellectual Property Law which includes copyright and moral rights. Images from the Indigenous Collections are also protected by cultural rights. This may limit what can be reproduced.

Museum Victoria reserves the right to refuse any requests to copy collection items. Museum Victoria does not hold the rights to some collection items but will endeavour when possible and in accordance with the Privacy Act 2001 to assist in clearing the rights to certain items.
