Fun and Games in The Melbourne Story

Years 3-4, Program led by museum staff

Fun and Games enables children to observe and interact with traditional playthings and games from different historical periods within the museum environment in order to explore the concept of change and continuity – ‘some things change, some things stay the same’. Toys and games give us a window onto the history of childhood. What questions can we ask of toys? How are toys related to our times?

Children are encouraged to consider how the technologies of a period shape the types of toys and games available and the way the natural and the social environment affects the types of games played. Through this process children can investigate which toys and games have lasted for centuries and why some are no longer around.

The activities will support integrated learning tasks and is connected to outcomes in all strands of VELS at level 3.
